Freestanding kitchen islands and rolling kitchen carts from Sunpan, SEI Furniture and Mercana add prep space, storage and a place to gather, with no renovation required.
Marble-Top Kitchen Islands
Sunpan's islands read like fine furniture: the Boden pairs a solid marble top with a chocolate oak veneer base, the Romilly sets a Banswara marble top on warm oak with open shelving and soft-close drawers, and the Cataldi wraps fluted panels in taupe faux leather beneath a marble top. Mercana's Fieri combines a solid iron body with a white Banswara marble top and an extended overhang for stool seating on one side.
Rolling Islands & Kitchen Carts
For smaller kitchens, mobile pieces move where you need them. SEI Furniture's Warkin Rolling Kitchen Island adds stemware racks and a wine-bottle bar, the Martinville Kitchen Cart has a butcher-block top that locks in place, and the Leshire cart brings farmhouse barn-door storage. Mercana's Stuart I is built from mango wood with four glass-insert drawers and towel racks on both sides.
Planning Around an Island
Plan for roughly 36 to 42 inches of walkway on each working side so doors and drawers open comfortably. If you want seating, choose an island with a countertop overhang and pair it with counter stools. Islands with closed storage can also double as a dry bar; see bar + bar carts for more serving pieces.
