Lighting is the most underestimated element in interior design. Furniture, color, and layout get the attention — but it's lighting that determines how a room actually feels. A beautifully furnished room with poor lighting looks flat and uninviting. A modestly furnished room with thoughtful lighting feels warm, layered, and designed. This guide covers the principles behind great home lighting and how to apply them in every room.

    The Three Layers of Lighting

Professional designers universally work with three categories of light. Understanding these three layers is the foundation of every lighting decision you'll make.

Ambient lighting is your base layer — the general illumination that fills a room and makes it functional. This comes from ceiling fixtures, recessed lights, or large pendants. Without adequate ambient light, a room feels dim regardless of how many accent lamps you add.

Task lighting targets specific activities: reading, cooking, applying makeup, working at a desk. A floor lamp beside a reading chair, under-cabinet lights in a kitchen, a vanity mirror light — these are all task lights. They need to be brighter than the ambient level and positioned to avoid casting shadows on your work surface.

Accent lighting highlights specific features — artwork, architectural details, bookshelves, plants. Picture lights, directional spotlights, and LED strip lighting are common accent sources. Accent lighting adds dimension and depth to a room by creating pools of light and shadow that draw the eye.

A well-lit room uses all three layers. When a space feels "off" but you can't identify why, it's usually missing one of these layers — often accent lighting, which is the easiest to overlook.

    Chandelier Sizing for Dining Rooms

A chandelier is one of the most impactful lighting decisions in a home, and also one of the most commonly undersized. A chandelier that looks perfect in a high-ceilinged showroom can look like a dangling ornament in an average dining room.

Use this formula for dining room chandeliers: add the room's length and width in feet, then convert to inches — that's the ideal chandelier diameter. A 12 × 14-foot dining room calls for a chandelier roughly 26 inches in diameter. For height over the table, hang the bottom of the chandelier 30–36 inches above the table surface in rooms with standard 8-foot ceilings. Add 3 inches for every additional foot of ceiling height.

The chandelier should be centered over the table, not the room. If your dining table is off-center in the room, the chandelier should follow the table.

    Pendant Lighting: Kitchens and Islands

Pendants over a kitchen island are functional, stylish, and the single fastest way to elevate a kitchen's look. The rule of thumb: hang pendants so the bottom sits 30–36 inches above the counter surface. For islands with seating, lean toward the higher end of that range so guests don't have to look through the fixtures.

Spacing matters as much as height. Pendants typically look best hung 24–30 inches apart, centered over the island. Avoid pendants that are too large — in a standard kitchen, pendants between 8 and 14 inches in diameter are usually proportional.

Floor Lamps and Reading Lamps: Placement Principles

Floor lamps serve double duty in living rooms: they add ambient warmth when used with a diffused shade, and they provide task lighting when positioned for reading. For a reading lamp, the bottom of the shade should be at roughly eye level when you're seated — about 40–42 inches from the floor. The light source itself should be slightly behind and to the side of the reader, not directly overhead, to minimize glare on the page.

Arc floor lamps — those with a long arm that sweeps over a sofa or chair — work well in rooms where you want a lamp over the seating but don't have side table space. Position the arc so the shade sits above head height to avoid glare.

    Bathroom Vanity Lighting

Bathroom lighting is almost exclusively task lighting, and the vanity light is the most critical element. The worst placement for a vanity light is directly overhead — it casts shadows down across your face, which is unflattering and makes detailed tasks like shaving or makeup application difficult.

The best option is side-mounted sconces at eye level, flanking the mirror. If overhead mounting is unavoidable, choose a long bar fixture that extends wide enough to light both sides of the face. Bulb color temperature matters enormously in bathrooms: aim for 2700K–3000K (warm white) for the most flattering, accurate light.

Bedroom Lighting: Layered for Rest and Function

Bedrooms need the full three-layer approach, but calibrated for sleep. Overhead ambient lighting should be on a dimmer — bright enough to get dressed in the morning, low enough to wind down at night. Bedside task lighting (table lamps or wall sconces) should be positioned at eye level when reading in bed, with a warm bulb temperature (2700K or lower) to support your body's natural wind-down process.

Blue-spectrum light — common in cool white LED bulbs — suppresses melatonin. Save cooler, brighter light for morning routines and use warmer, dimmer light in the hour before bed.

Let There Be the Right Light

Great home lighting is neither expensive nor complicated — it requires understanding the three layers, sizing fixtures to the room, and choosing the right color temperature for each space. Start with what's missing in your least-comfortable room, and work outward from there.
