Area Rug Size Guide: How to Choose the Right Rug for Every Room
The right area rug can transform a room — anchoring furniture, defining spaces, and adding warmth underfoot. But the wrong size rug is one of the most common decorating mistakes. Too small, and it looks like an afterthought. This guide gives you the exact measurements for every room.
Living Room Rug Sizing
You have two main approaches:
All legs on the rug: The rug should extend at least 6-8 inches beyond all furniture on every side. For most living rooms, this means a 9x12 or 10x14 rug. This creates a cohesive, pulled-together look.
Front legs only: Place just the front legs of sofas and chairs on the rug. This works well with an 8x10 rug in most living rooms and is the more budget-friendly approach. The rug should still extend about 18 inches in front of the sofa.
Dining Room Rug Sizing
The cardinal rule: your rug must extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. For a standard 72-inch dining table, you need at minimum a 9x12 rug. For an 84-96-inch table, go with a 10x14. Round tables need round rugs — a 54-inch round table needs at least an 8-foot round rug.
Bedroom Rug Sizing
- Large area rug under the bed: An 8x10 or 9x12 placed under the bottom two-thirds of the bed, extending 2-3 feet on each side.
- Runner on each side: Two 2.5x8 runners flanking the bed. Budget-friendly and practical.
- Rug at the foot: A 5x8 placed horizontally at the foot of the bed.
Common Rug Sizes and Where They Work
- 3x5 and 4x6: Entryways, in front of a fireplace, small accent areas
- 5x8: Small living rooms, under a desk, bedroom foot-of-bed
- 6x9: Apartment living rooms, small dining areas
- 8x10: The most popular size. Standard living rooms, 6-seat dining rooms
- 9x12: Large living rooms, 8-seat dining rooms, king bedrooms
- 10x14: Great rooms, large dining rooms, open floor plans
